Ever since I have been the Service Manager at Lakewood Chevrolet I have recommended to all of our customers to do their first Oil change early, somewhere between 1500 to 2500 kilometers.
During my apprenticeship, one of my automotive instructors suggested the best service you can do for your new vehicle is to perform the first oil change early. Engines today are engineered and machined to very close tolerances but there's still what's called a break-in period. During this time the engine components are machining, wearing, fitting, and sealing together. The engine oil washes away the metal filings and the oil filter collects and holds the majority of debris. A small percentage of debris and metal filings will pass through the filter and actually cycle through the engines oiling system. This debris is what you want to get rid of by changing the oil early. We have noticed when draining out the old oil it will look clean but will have a texture to it like pumice.
This service isn't recommended by GM and it also won't make a difference during the warranty period, but it could help you extend the life of your engine.
One last thing regarding performing your first service early is the importance of getting your vehicle up in the air and having a professional check the undercarriage and drivetrain for any concerns. Today vehicles are built better then ever, but they're still built by man and machine, mistakes and/or oversights can happen. A pre-delivery inspection is performed when the vehicle is received from the factory and any concerns are corrected.
I believe performing this early service is good for "peace of mind" and it definitely won't hurt anything.
