The harsh climate we experience in Edmonton is tough on vehicles making regular maintenence critical to long term enjoyment of your Chevrolet or other General Motors vehicle.

General Motors has introduced "Dexos1 certified" engine oil as the minimum requirement for all 2011 General Motors vehicles. Dexos1 is a new semi-synthetic specification that's been refined to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles. Dexos1 will help with reducing engine emissions and increasing fuel economy, promote long engine life, and reduce the number of oil changes required. Together this will help to lower the overall dependence on crude oil.

Many of today's engine have exotic features such as variable valve timing, active cylinder deactivation, turbocharging, etc. All of these systems are lubricated, cooled, and managed by the engines oiling system and Dexos1 was designed to help with the increased loads put on the system.

Dexos1 isn't meant to be a substitute for a pure synthetic oil such as Mobil1, please read your owners manual for the minimum requirement that your vehicle requires.

Engine Oil Scheduled Maintenance.

If your vehicle is equipped with an Oil Life Monitoring (OLM) system, you need to change your oil and filter as the system indicates. The OLM system uses the engine computer to calculate your driving habits based on driving conditions, temperature, and crankshaft revolutions.

The "CHANGE ENGINE OIL" message will come on with approximately 20% oil life remaining and it is suggested to get an oil change done withing the next two fuel fills. In perfect conditions with minimal driving it's possible that the change oil light won't come on for over one year, however, the oil and filter must be changed at least once a year. When an oil change is performed the OLM has to be reset as there aren't any sensors that sense cleanliness or quality of the oil.

General Motors also suggests in harsh, severe, or extreme driving conditions it is advisable to change the oil and filter at regular intervals of 5,000 kilometers or every 6 months. These conditions are:

1) Temperatures below freezing;

2) Hilly or mountainous terrain;

3) Heavy city traffic;

4) Dusty, muddy off road conditions;

5) Vehicles used for short trips of 6 kilometers or less; and

6) All commercial applications.

We strongly recommend that many of our customers consider changing their oil every 5,000 kilometers due to these factors.

CAUTION: It is critical that you check and top up your oil level regularly at every gas fill. The OLM doesn't check oil level and if the level is allowed to drop below the minimum you can damage your engine. Check your engines oil level when hot, a couple minutes after shutting the engine off. Checking your oil level in the morning or after the engine has been turned off for more than 15 minutes will give you an incorrect oil level reading.
