Get a proper vehicle inspection prior to purchase.

When buying a pre-owned vehicle it's important to have a proper mechanical inspection completed by a unbiased licensed technician prior to purchase. On many occasions we have diagnosed a vehicle only to find that the vehicle was recently purchased and if the vehicle had been inspected it may not have been bought.

If the seller won't allow you to have an inspection performed, DON'T buy it! The cost of an inspection is minimal compared to the cost of any deficiencies and both can be used as a pricing leverage.

Today's tires and suspension are engineered to such a high standard that a concern might not be noticeable with just a road test. The vehicle needs to be raised with the wheels removed in order to inspect the brakes and suspension. It needs to be inspected for any fluid leaks, even a minor leak can be a very costly repair. Inspection of all fluid condition can indicate how the vehicle has been driven or maintained. A seasoned technician will be aware of common concerns and problems that a layperson may not be. Look for evidence of a poor body repair as a result of collision damage, a proper body repair shouldn't be detectable in anyway.

I don't believe there is a need to perform an engine compression test.  If there is a problem with the engine, today's emission systems will record a concern and usually the "check engine" light will be on.

Another concern we have seen is with the "SIR" or "Air Bag" system. People have actually removed the system, replaced the air bags with blank modules, and removed the warning lights and systems from the vehicle. The "Air Bag" system should be scanned to verify that it is in place and operational.
